Set to open in October 2021, the Ellison Hotel located in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, will stand in The Triangle at Classen Curve and work in partnership with Ralph Ellison Foundation. It will mark Marriott International’s first foray into Oklahoma under its Tribute Portfolio brand, which focuses on independent boutique hotels “rooted in their local community”. Ralph Ellison, who the hotel is in tribute of, was born in Oklahoma City in 1913. Ellison is an internationally esteemed author, best known for his first novel Invisible Man.

Chamberlin was brought onto the project by general contractor Vincit Build to perform roofing and waterproofing. The roofing crew has been working on TPO roofing and sheet metal flashing and trim. The waterproofing scope includes fluid applied waterproofing, tapered ISO, joint sealants and epoxy vapor barrier on the deck.

The crews have been working hard on the sixth-floor roof of the Ellison hotel battling high winds and rain since construction started. With the weather obstacles, ensuring the building is watertight and protected from the elements through the night is pertinent. Inclement weather has also created the need for flexibility in the work schedule. Chamberlin utilizes weather days for moving material, securing tarps and removing trash bundles from the roof. Despite all the setbacks, the crew members have kept safety as a top priority while installing quality work and instilling teamwork.

Chamberlin’s value, Safety – Quality – Teamwork states, “Think of it as a three legged stool. Remove any one leg, and the stool will fall over. Each leg is dependent on the other in order for the stool to function for its intended purpose. And so it is with our business. Each and every day we must excel at safety. We must excel at quality. We must excel at teamwork. So it’s easy to see that for our work to be successful it must, first of all, be done safely. Secondly, it must be of high quality. And, finally, we must work as a team.“

Chamberlin Foreman Kyle Murray has been highly impressed with his crews, especially his head roofer, Mark Brannon. “I know that Mark and the rest of the crew are exhausted, and I know that it would be easy for them to give in to the emotional and physical fatigue that comes with working such long days. However, they show up every day with great attitudes and cooperative spirits. I couldn’t ask for a better crew," Murray said. With the waterproofing and roofing crew’s expertise, willingness to help each other and detailed work, Chamberlin has helped in making The Ellison Hotel a well-built tribute to Ralph Ellison.
